Hello and welcome to this week’s newsletter.
The Common
Phil Smith has had articles published in both Undefined Boundary and Waiting for You: A Detectorists Zine, so you may be familiar with some of his writing. He has just published a collection of poetry, The Common: An Assemblage of Poems, which is available directly from him (details below). Phil is an exponent of mythogeography which is a method of engaging with the environment so as to reveal the multiple meanings that lurk below the surface of the capitalist spectacle. Although related to psychogeography, mythogeography seeks to return a more radical, activist meaning to its practices. I would urge you to explore the Mythogeography website which has tons of resources and which can empower you to see the world in a more radical way.
The Common is available directly from Phil at mytho.smith@btopenworld.com. Below is his announcement on Facebook.
I am publishing today a collection of poems - 'The Common' - my first collection; some of the poems I have posted here on FB, some I have read to others, and some have never been released into the wild before. If you would like a copy they cost £5 (p&p included) to UK people, £10 if I am posting to Europe and £15 for Asia, US and beyond (all p&p included), either send me a message on FB or email me on mytho.smith@btopenworld.com with a postal address and I'll explain how to get the money to me.
I Was 21 Years
Last night, Radio 4’s Archive on 4 programme was presented by Billy Bragg 40 years after the release of his first album. I Was 21 Years takes as its starting point the lyric from his song ‘A New England’ to look at the similarities and differences between young adults in 1983 and in 2023. There are some interesting observations, such as the shift from subcultures to brands, and the influence of social media casts a long shadow over the decades. There is a sobering reflection on the change from fear of nuclear war in the 80s to fear of environmental catastrophe now. But perhaps most sobering of all is the real sense of disenfranchisement that young people now feel, struggling to make ends meet in precarious jobs without the security of a decent welfare system which historically gave space to young people discovering how to use their creativity.
Michael Cashmore’s Transformation Through Love
I’m pleased to see that copies of this book/CD package are now arriving at destinations around the world with some very positive feedback. Remember that it is limited to 434 numbered copies and that this is the only form in which Michael’s new album will be released.
Undefined Boundary Vol 2 Issue 1
“Figures as divergent as Margery Kempe and Angela Carter, with their wildly different beliefs about the world, appear as similarly singleminded and driven individuals who seek a sense of greater fulfilment through their own unique visions.” From the Introduction
The Daughters of Psychick Albion issue is still with the printers. I’ve been given a delivery date of 30th November but I’m hoping it might be a little sooner than that.
