Christmas songs advent calendar Day 6
‘Frosty the Snowman’ by Cocteau Twins
The thing that I like about this rendition of ‘Frosty the Snowman’ is that it sounds quite in keeping with the rest of the Cocteau’s discography rather than an out of character novelty song. Liz Fraser even makes it difficult to understand the words she sings so it can almost sound like her usual nonsense lyrics. Cocteau Twins first appeared in the 1980s, refining the Banshees’ post-punk sound to create something too ethereal to sit easily in the goth songbook. And it’s that ethereal sound of the heavily modulated guitar that segues so well with the saccharine soundworld of Christmas. Of course, the lyrics to the song are too distressing to dwell on. Like the later animated film The Snowman, this is all about creating life through magic and then watching it melt away. And all seen through the innocent eyes of a child. Too painful for words. Now I can barely see my screen through the tears, so I should sign off at this point.
I’ll be adding these songs to a Spotify playlist, ‘Christmas songs advent calendar 2024’.
