‘Just Like Christmas’ by Low

On our way from Stockholm,
It started to snow,
And you said it was like Christmas,
But you were wrong,
It wasn't like Christmas at all.

‘Just Like Christmas’ is taken from Low’s wonderful 1999 Christmas EP. There’s a definite indie feel to this song so it might well appeal to people who don’t normally like Christmas songs. But it marries the indie feel with the persistent sound of sleigh bells running throughout so that the standard Christmassy sound provides a backdrop to the more downbeat melody. Somehow, the tropes of Christmas music become transformed into something personal and quite distinct. For me, ‘Just Like Christmas’ captures the odd feeling of living through this extended period of commercialised festivity without feeling quite at home in it.
