‘Tinsel and Lights’ by Tracey Thorn
“And we’ve all learned some things about how the time goes
That we’d rather not know.”
And so, with a pleasing circularity, we arrive at the end of the advent calendar back where we started. Tracey Thorn’s album Tinsel and Lights was the record that first got me really thinking about Christmas songs rather than just passively consuming them. ‘Tinsel and Lights’ is the second song written by Tracey Thorn on the album, the rest being very well chosen cover versions. It tells the story of a Christmas romance in New York; a bold move considering how large the shadow of that other song looms. (In case you’re wondering, I excluded the Pogues/Macoll song from the advent calendar for being too obvious).
I hope that you’ve enjoyed this advent calendar and that you’ve discovered a song or two that will become part of your Christmases to come. I should also say how much I’ve appreciated the feedback that I’ve received. I haven’t had a great year and the comments you’ve sent me have helped me to end the year in a better place.
If you enjoyed the advent calendar, and you can afford it, perhaps you could consider donating to my Kofi. Or you could have a look at the membership options at my Patreon. And if you can’t afford that, I would love to hear your thoughts about the Christmas songs I’ve shared here. The Spotify playlist is now complete so all that remains is for me to thank you for your interest and support this year, and to wish you a merry Christmas!

Thank you for this fine advent Cormac - shared on our drive from Cornwall to Cambridge with much joy. Singing along with laughter to the Cliche of being Cynical at Christmas. Loving Kate Bush and Coil in particular.
And the one above is for you - happy Christmas!
