Christmas songs advent calendar Day 9

‘In Dulci Jublio’ by Mike Oldfield

Maybe today’s choice is a bit mainstream? If so, I think it’s still worthy of inclusion for the fact that it’s a modern (well, 1970s…) interpretation of an old Christmas carol that manages to feel traditional and contemporary at the same time. This is no doubt due to Mike Oldfield’s incredible musical virtuosity, showcased brilliantly in the video. I think it’s a shame that Oldfield’s creative genius seemed to wane after the 70s. His precocious talent and visionary compositional skills could have made him our Mozart. Instead, we are left with endless reworkings of Tubular Bells.
